about

Every Morning Sun was recorded in the summer of ‘21, over two weekends at Jason Cirimele’s studio in Pescadero, CA. I recorded all songs on my Tascam 688 8 track cassette machine with SM 58’s, SM7B (acoustic guitar) and an EV 635A (overhead drums). The sessions included Anthony Zaitz on bass, Jason Cirimele on drums and myself on acoustic guitar. After morning surf with Anthony at Martin’s Beach, we’d start tracking in the late afternoon, then break for dinner, local wine and psychedelic mushrooms. Around 10pm, we did overdubs. Jason wizardly laid Hammond organ, electric guitar and bongos on each song. In the early purple hours of dawn, Jason closed one of our sessions with a Slim Whitman record. I will always remember the feeling of sleepless wonder in those sessions, like the warble bowed saw cry of Slim’s love songs. Anthony’s favorite song on the record is Kitchen Dad Dance. I mic’d the amps and instruments with dynamic mics to get an intimate sound. We used mexican blankets to iso the instruments, adding to that mellow Pescadero vibe. Ruby was written by Erica Kuhn-Fink. Indianna Hale helped me write You Only Call Me When It Rains. Indianna also sang on Ruby and Every Morning Sun With You. Cory Gray dubbed keys and mixed the record in Portland, OR. The cover photos were taken by Judy Butterfield in California. This record is special to me because it captures a moment in the summer of ‘21, when I gathered with my friends to make music again.-Bobby T.
